Power grids attacked; Kherson liberated; plans for 2023

The liberation of Kherson in mid-November was a turning point in Russia’s war. In February, everyone wondered how quickly Ukraine would fall, but through spring the key element was the ability of Ukraine’s Armed Forces to withstand Russia’s “artillery firewall.” By summer, everyone was wondering about Ukraine’s capacity to run a major counter-offensive. By now, Ukraine’s forces have made it clear that they can systematically beat the enemy, and win this war on the battlefield.

For Russia’s domestic TV audience, the return of Kherson to Ukrainian hands after more than eight months of occupation was also a dramatic blow to the myth of “Russki mir.” Continuing defeats will have serious consequences for internal politics in Russia, though it’s hard to predict how that will look.
