President of Belarus dismisses cabinet

On June 3 President Alexander Lukashenka dismissed his government. A presidential election is scheduled for August 9. Lukashenka 's bold gambit might be linked to the election. The current incumbent is expected to be re-elected for the sixth time. A fair election is unimaginable. Lukashenka, 65, has held office since 1994. There is no limit to the number of terms of he can serve.Only hours before firing the cabinet Lukashenka had said he would not do so. Prime Minister Syarhey Rumas is one of those who has been fired. No PM has yet been appointed - so the office is vacant.Opposition campaigner Mikalay Statkevich has been barred from running for election. Statkevich is serving a short jail sentence for protesting. There have been small scale protests in several cities. This is are in a country which is intolerant of dissent.Lukashenka people said there would be no Maidan in Belarus. He was alluding to the Maidan Square in Kyiv. Ukrainian governments have been toppled by large-scale protests in the last 20 years.
