President of Uzbekistan meets President of France. On 9 October the President of Uzbekistan visited Paris. President Mirziyoyev met President Macron of France. Uzbekistan considers this a major success since most Western governments were unwilling to receive the late President Karimov due to human rights concerns. Uzbekistan is eager to attract investment from as many countries as possible, and is seeking to increase transparency and ease of doing business in the country. Consequently, meeting French business leaders was also on Mirziyoyev's agenda, as he looks to increase FDI. Uzbekistan has pledged to issue its first Eurobond and in September appointed a director from HSBC to oversee its debt issuance office. Mirziyoyev also visited the headquarters of Unesco; Uzbekistan has many famous mosques and tombs and the country is keen to preserve these and make them tourist attractions. The current Uzbek president has followed a cautiously reformist policy since been elected in 2016. He has released some people detained under his predecessor. He is allowing BBC and other international media to operate more freely in Uzbekistan.
