President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has pardoned ex-president Fujimori

This afternoon after a special cabinet meeting PPK granted a humanitarian pardon to ex-President Alberto Fujimori. Yesterday Fujimori was hurriedly taken to a local clinic because of an arrhythmia. In the highly polarized political situation Peru is undergoing, it is expected that the anti-Fujimori camp will stage protests. Nonetheless, this act paves the way for the possibility of a rapprochement between the executive and the Fujimori majority-led congress (Fuerza Popular). The pardon was vigorously promoted by the Kenji Fujimori group, a dissident faction from his sister Keiko, whose official line was not to use her majority clout to force her father's release. Last Thursday Kuczynski narrowly missed being ousted from the Presidency during a very tight congress vote that got help from ten members of Kenji adepts. This pardon is likely to increase the number of adherents to Kenji's faction in detriment of the absolute majority his sister presently holds in Congress.
