President's Popularity Crumbles

Gallup released its most recent opinion poll and President Santos' popularity fell from 46% to 21%. Even though the poll was carried out last week when protests and strikes had reached a climax and before the President took bold moves to quell unjustified violence, his political future is riding now, more than ever, on the fate of the peace process.Political memory is short-lived in Colombia and the next opinion poll is likely to show better numbers on Mr. Santos' popularity, but preserving the Government coalition in Congress and dealing with requests from peasants, truck drivers, etc., will cost more in fiscal terms. Keep in mind that next year's budget is currently being discussed in Congress.
