President Tokaev offers to boost liberal economic reforms and hold an early presidential election

KAZAKHSTAN - In Brief 01 Sep 2022 by Alexander Kudrin

President Tokaev (69) suggested holding an early presidential election this year, limiting the presidential term by seven years and not allowing re-election. Mr. Tokaev delivered these proposals in his address to the nation at a joint meeting of the lower and upper chambers of the parliament. As Mr. Tokaev's popularity is high enough, he can secure another seven years and stay in power. Mr. Tokaev suggested continuing liberal reforms, stimulating private initiative, promoting competition, and arranging a fair income distribution - for instance, by introducing a tax on luxurious goods that won’t affect the country’s middle class. Encouraging foreign companies that leave Russia to relocate their business to Kazakhstan can be considered an integral part of this story. Evgeny Gavrilenkov Alexander Kudrin
