Presidential candidates picked women as their ticket companions

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - In Brief 11 Mar 2020 by Pavel Isa

Last night, all presidential candidates completed their ballots for the elections in May and in the three largest parties all vice-presidential nominees are women. About two weeks ago, Gonzalo Castillo, candidate of the PLD, elected the current vice president Margarita Cedeño. The presence of Cedeño in the ticket should contribute to strengthen the electoral position of the PLD, seriously affected at this time. However, the rest of the candidates made the announcement just last night when the deadline for registration expired. Luis Abinader (PRM and allies) picked Raque Peña, an unknown person in politics. However, the decision may contribute to bringing Abinader closer to the business sectors of the north of the country and perhaps to ecclesial sectors. For his part, Leonel Fernández chose Sergia Elena Mejía as his ballot companion. Mejía is experienced in politics. In the past, she was a high-ranking member of the Partido Reformista (conservative), who, in these elections, has joined Fernández. Although Mejía do not contribute to strengthen the electoral support for Fernández, it certainly built on his alliance with politically conservative sectors of society.
