Protests in Armenia threaten PM

On May 17 over 400 people were arrested for a demonstration in Yerevan that obstructed streets. They were demanding that Prime Minister Pashinian resign. The city center was in gridlock due to the protestors obstructing traffic. Since May 1 there has been a concerted effort to force Pashinian from office. But there have been smaller protests since mid April. There is a campaign of civil disobedience due to Pashinian's proposed peace deal with Azerbaijan. This would require painful concessions. Armenia would have to recognize Nagorno Karabakh as rightfully Azerbaijani soil. At the moment says that the disputed region is an independent country called Artsakh. No other country in the world recognizes Artsakh. Pashinian said he would only sign a peace deal if he consulted Artsakh first. He could 'consult' them but sign it anyway against their wishes.A joint commission with the Azerbaijanis to delimit the border between the two countries has also sparked ire.Some have wanted Pashinian to resign since he lost the 2020 war against Azerbaijan. At the moment there is no sign that he will step down.A peace treaty would lead to a peace dividend: trade with Turkey and Azerbaijan. Armenia needs this badly as the Russian economic downturn is hurting Armenia's already fragile economy.
