Putin hails friendship with India

On December 6 the Russian President visited New Delhi. He acclaimed India as a ''great power'' as he met Prime Minister Modi. India and the USSR were allies for decades. India has a more positive view of Russian than almost any other non former Soviet nation. This is the second foreign visit Putin has made since the pandemic began. That is a measure of the importance attached to relations with Delhi. Putin missed the G20 and COP26. This is partly because the 69 year old is concerned about coronavirus.The summit between the leaders is about defense cooperation and energy sales. Rosneft's CEO was in Delhi for talks.India is a major buyer of Russian arms. Putin said that cooperation with India is better than with any other nation.In 2018 India signed a USD 5 billion arms deal to purchase S-400 surface-to air-missiles. That was even though the US threatened sanctions. Moscow reaffirmed today that the sales are proceeding.China and India are almost at daggers drawn. A border clash between them in 2020 left dozens dead. China dislikes Russian arms sales to India. This is another sign that relations between Moscow and Beijing are not as fraternal as Putin would have people believe.The Indian and Russian foreign ministers also met. Items on the agenda included collaboration on space missions (India has its own space program), Afghanistan and making Sputnik V in India.
