Putin in Kazakhstan

On November 9 Putin met his Kazakh counterpart in Astana. President Tokayev said that the relationship between the two former Soviet states has a bright future. The chemistry between the two seemed to be surprisingly good. This is only Putin's third trip abroad since the Ukraine War began. In 2022 Tokayev irritated Putin by stating in his presence that Kazakhstan recognizes Luhansk and Donetsk as part of Ukraine.  Kazakhstan is a military ally of Russia in the CSTO. It is a fellow member of the Eurasian Economic Union. But the Kazakhs are neutral in the Ukraine War. Astana has assured the US that it is not allowing its competitors to help Russia evade sanctions. There is evidence that Kazakhstan has cracked down on companies that were doing this. Russia's influence in Kazakhstan is not as extensive as it used to be but is still a long way from disappearing.
