Putin keeps open option to run in 2024

On March 10 Russian President Vladimir Putin said he supported a constitutional amendment that would allow his presidential terms already served to be zeroed. This would thus allow him to run in 2024 and serve again as president. The amendment is contingent on approval from the Constitutional Court. However, Putin did not support unlimited presidential terms. The United Russia Party yesterday voted that the limit on presidential terms ought to be abolished. Putin's term is due to expire in 2024. However, an opinion poll showed only 27% want Putin to remain in office. He has ruled as president or prime minister since 2000.Despite the moves, it remains to be seen whether Putin will actually take up any new option to run. It may be a hedging tactic to avoid having to commit to new candidates while wider constitutional changes are voted on.
