Putin meets Xi

On September 15 the Presidents met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan. Putin thanked Xi for China's balanced stance on Ukraine. This was their first in person meeting since the war began. Putin effusively backed China's position on Taiwan. Taiwan is part of China and must be reintegrated. The summit was part of Xi's first trip abroad since before the pandemic. Xi said that Russia and China are a force for stability.  China has not endorsed Russia's view on the conflict but neither had it disagreed with it. Russia wants to buy shells from North Korea. North Korea does 90% of its trade with China and would only sell shells to Russia if China did not object. China used to buy a lot of food and metals form Ukraine. The Chinese were major investors in Ukraine and wanted to purchase more property there. The Ukraine War has not been good for China. Putin also met the Iranian President at the summit. They said US sanctions were drawing them closer together. The Belarusian President also attended. Belarus thanked China for being supportive. The President of Turkey attended despite his country not being in the SCO. SCO consists of China, Russia, India, Pakistan and Central Asian countries. SCO is supposed to be an alternative to Western dominated fora.
