Putin orders Russian Military to recruit 137,000 people

On August 25 the president said the million-strong Armed Forces need to expand to over 1.15 million. The figures exclude civilians working for the military. The expansion is to be completed by January 2023. Russia will find it very difficult to achieve this. People in their early 20s were born in the early 2000s, when the fertility rate was low. The US concludes that Russia is expanding the army because the war is going badly and Russia knows the war will last for years. With current troop numbers Russia will be unable to conquer Ukraine. Russia has been reducing its number of soldiers for years as it concentrated on more advanced technology and a smaller but highly trained army. The EU announced on August 25 that a million Russians had moved to the EU from February to August 2022. This is another reason why recruiting for the army will be difficult.
