Putin registered as an election candidate

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 29 Jan 2024 by Alex Teddy

On January 29 the announcement was made by the Central Election Commission (CEC). The Putin campaign successfully submitted the requisite number of signatures for his registration, which is 315,000. A small number were invalidated because of mistakes. The signatures had to come from at least 40 of Russia's 85 regions, with no more than one region providing too many of them. The number of signatures required is a high bar to clear for minor candidates. Three candidates from other parties have already been accepted for nomination by CEC. The Liberal Democrats, Communists and New People all have candidates. They did not have to gather signatures because they are parties with deputies in parliament. Putin is an independent, so he needed to.  There is a pro-peace candidate from a party without any deputies in parliament but it is unlikely that the CEC will register his nomination. The deadline is January 31. Putin is seeking a record 5th term. The election will be held on March 15-17. It is virtually certain that Putin will win. The challenge is to have a decent turnout and make Putin win by an even greater percentage than before. Most people are apathetic and know that their votes cannot change anything.
