Renewed pressure on Belarus

On August 10 Lukashenka hit out at the US and UK after they imposed yet more sanctions on Belarus. On August 8 there were large scale anti-Lukashenka marches in Ukraine. Belarusian oppositionists have often fled to Ukraine.On August 3 a Belarussian oppositionist Vital Shyshou was found hanged from a tree in a Kyiv park. Why would a healthy 24 year old with no history of mental ill health commit suicide? The suspicion is that he was murdered by Belarusian agents. Lukashenka said that the Ukrainian intelligence services had been assisting Shyshou.Lukashenka said that Ukraine trains Belarusian militants who want to overthrow him and Ukraine is smuggling arms into Belarus. He said he might break the Budapest Memorandum because Ukraine will not allow Belarusian airlines to fly over its airspace. He has suggested he might recognize Crimea as Russian. The border between Ukraine and Belarus is closed. Zelensky said that Lukashenka's accusations are utterly bogus. The two men used to have a warm relationship. Ukraine does not need another enemy. However, to curry favor with NATO, the Ukrainians have decided that they had to stand firm against Lukashenka.
