Russia and Iraqi oil

On October 7 the US announced it was pulling troops out of Syria. Trump has reversed that decision temporarily but there is no doubt that the United States wants to withdraw from Syria sooner or later. Some Americans complained that a US withdrawal would leave the Kurds in Iraq vulnerable to attack by Turkey. Turkey has a large Kurdish ethnic minority. Turkey considers the Kurdish fighters in Iraq and Syria to be terrorists and has fought them for decades. Iraqi Kurdistan has been de facto independent since 1991.Rosneft has been trying to gain access to Iraqi Kurdistan for decades. The USD 70 billion company has been subject to US sanctions since 2014. In 2017 Rosneft purchased pipelines that run from Iraq to Turkey. Turkey has a very cordial relationship with Russia. If Turkey defeats the Kurds and oil from northern Iraq flows through Turkey then Rosneft will benefit. Turkey is a NATO member but its relationship with the US is dreadful now.
