Russia and Ukraine exchange prisoners

On September 8 Russia and Ukraine returned prisoners to each other. Those released included a key witness to the downing of the Malaysia Airlines flight in 2014 as well as 24 Ukrainian sailors. Some people are hopeful that this exchange of prisoners prefigures serious peace negotiations. Both sides still hold several hundred prisoners. This is not the first time in the 5 year long conflict that prisoners have been freed. However, it is the largest single release of prisoners. Russia does not consider the men it was holding to be POWs. Most of them had been charged with crimes. Russia's move has pleased NATO. The conflict is de-escalating.Russia is eager to rejoin the G7 and make it the G8 again. President Macron of France said that Russia will only be readmitted if Russia withdraws from Donbass and Crimea. Russia's position is that she does not have soldiers in Donbass and that Crimea is lawfully Russian.
