Russia attempts political advertising crackdown

The Russian Communication Agency announced on September 6 that it was demanding that Facebook, Google and other internet companies must stop political advertisements in Russia on September 7 and 8. This is because local elections are taking place on Sunday 8 September. The government is increasingly concerned with controlling the internet. The United Russia party - which is in government at federal level - is in trouble in these elections. Voters are going to the polls in many regions including Moscow. Some United Russia candidates are running as independents. Large scale protests have gone on for several weeks. Demonstrators accuse the government of flagrant cheating and barring opposition candidates on spurious grounds.
