Russia banned from major sporting competitions

On December 9 the World Anti Doping Agency announced that Russia would not be allowed to take part in most sports competitions for the next 4 years. WADA found that Russia had interfered with data and samples collected to verify that doping was not taking place. This is a blow for Russia. The country takes international sport very seriously indeed. It is one area where Russia can sometimes be the best in the world.Individual Russian athletes can compete but under the Olympic Flag if they can prove that they do not take banned substances. This was what happened at the Winter Olympics last year. Russia was caught doping on a huge scale in 2015. The country was given time to clean up its act. But instead the cover up went on. Many in the International Olympic Committee consider the previous punishment to have been too lenient.Russia has 21 days in which to appeal. It is unlikely that the decision will be overturned. Some feel that this ban is about optics. No one objected to Russia hosting the Football World Cup in 2018. The Russian Football Team has not been accused of doping but might be excluded from the next World Cup due to the WADA ruling.
