On December 5 Russia kicked out a Bulgarian diplomat in reprisal for Bulgaria refusing a visa to a Russian defense attache. In October Bulgaria expelled a Russian diplomat for 'activities incompatible with diplomatic status' which is a euphemism for spying. Russia is Bulgaria's main energy supplier. Russia might yet choose to punish Bulgaria by reducing energy sales.Bulgaria is former communist country that is now and EU and NATO country. That rankles in Moscow. There are strong cultural links between Bulgaria and Russia. Both are Slavonic speaking countries which have Orthodox Christianity as their major religious denomination. Russia helped to liberate Bulgaria from the Turks in the 19th century.
