Russia claims it successfully trialed sovereign internet

On December 24 the Ministry of Communications said that Russia trialed its unplugged internet several hours. It claimed that it was so successful that people did not even notice. Experts are sceptical about the trial. Did it really happen at a full scale? People surely would have noticed some sites being blocked. The government gave no details about the trial which adds to scepticism. Putin is keen to have a sovereign internet like China and Iran. This will allow him to block 'extremist content' i.e. anything he dislikes. Ideally VPNs would not work with the sovereign internet. Russia is also creating its own answer to wikipedia.Moscow understands the vital importance of controlling information and shaping opinion. Russia is also worried that the US could use sanctions on the internet and cut Russia off from the internet at least in part. A sovereign internet would obviate this.
