Russia closes offices of human rights organizations

On April 8 Moscow said it was shutting the offices of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International. Both bodies have had operations in Russia since the early 1990s. Thirty organizations have been removed from the registry of international organizations in Russia owing to breaking the law. The government did not say which laws had been broken. Other organizations that have been closed include the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a Polish cultural association. It is suspected that HRW and Amnesty have been shuttered because of their reportage on the Ukraine situation. Amnesty has vowed to continue to monitor the human rights situation in Russia notwithstanding its office being closed. Amnesty said it has been closed because it is doing the right thing.On April 8 another 6 people were dubbed foreign agents. One of them is a well known rapper called Face.
