Russia commences military exercises with South-East Asian allies

On December 1 the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia began their drills in the Straits of Malacca. This is the first time Russia has taken part in drills with ASEAN. The Russian ship Admiral Pantaleev is there. Russia sells a lot of arms to Vietnam. This complicates Russia's relationship with China since Vietnam and China sometimes have antipathy towards each other. ASEAN is also perturbed by Chinese expansionism. China builds artificial islands in the South China Sea and then claims the territorial waters. China and the Philippines both claims the Spratly Islands. Russia's participation in ASEAN drill is also a reminder that Beijing and Moscow's relationship is not as cooperative as is sometimes imagined. The Kremlin said the exercises are about maintaining peace and stability. Russia is keen to develop ''a strategic partnership'' with ASEAN. ASEAN has sometimes conducted drills with China and sometimes with the USA. It is therefore very gratifying for Russia to replace those countries in ASEAN's affections even for a moment.
