Russia encourages Iran to stand firm against the USA

On April 29 Moscow said that Iran should not cave in to American provocations. Russia asked Tehran to be cautious and restrained. The United States was slammed for ''aggressive rhetoric''. Iran and the US have argued over the incident on April 15 in which 11 Iranian patrol boats came close to a US warship. Trump ordered the US Navy to destroy any Iranian vessel which 'harasses' a US warship. This order is probably illegal. Russia called for both countries to abide by international law.Iran's economy is reeling from sanctions and low oil prices. It was relying on buying grain from Russia. Russia has now banned almost all grain exports. Russia has no principled attachment to Iran. Iran is a useful counterweight to the US. Russia might try to play honest broker between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
