Statistics out on December 3 showed that the death toll in October 2021 was a record. There were 90,000 coronavirus deaths from October 2021 which is a 57% YoY increase. That is a damning indictment of the failure to get more people vaccinated. There have been 813,000 coronavirus deaths in total since the pandemic began. It is suspected that the true death toll is considerably higher. Rosstat is the state statistics agency and it is notorious for massaging data to make it look good for the government.Rules on social distancing are slack. Masks are seldom worn and not many people are getting tested. Many people do not trust the Sputnik V vaccine. Russia has the highest per capita number of doctors in the world so its healthcare cannot be faulted for staff levels.In 2020 before coronavirus struck there were declining death rates. Life expectancy was rising as healthcare improved and smoking and drinking rates fell. Russia has been in a population decline. Guest workers from former Soviet countries were laid off in 2020. They were obliged to return to Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Armenia. Many have not been re-employed in 2021. The Kremlin has been accused of minimizing the gravity of the situation. The excess death toll is more than three times the official number of coronavirus deaths. Excess deaths is seen as the most trustworthy measure of the true death toll from the pandemic. People who die with coronavirus often have their deaths ascribed to other conditions that commonly co-occur with coronavirus, such as pneumonia.
