Russia holds Games of the Future

On March 3 the games closed in Kazan, Russia where they had taken place over 11 days. Kazan is the capital of Tatarstan. The games included 21 events: physical ones and digital games. There was a budget of USD 65 million, and it was claimed that 2,000 people from 107 countries took part. However, the great majority of the athletes were Russian. The events included speedrunning, robot games, drone races, bank tank simulators and phygital football. Putin went to the games as did the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Tajikistan and Republika Srpska (part of Bosnia). Putin wants to underscore that Russia is not isolated. Putin spoke to the Central Asian leaders who visited Kazan. Kyrgyzstan opened a consulate in Kazan in February 2024. There is talk of a Central Asian country co-hosting the games with Russia. It is significant that the games were held in Tatarstan. This is the homeland of an indigenous ethnic minority. The Tatars speak a Turkic language and are Muslims. Russia likes to highlight the Tatars to enhance friendship with Turkey. While in Kazan, Putin visited a military plane factory and was shown supersonic bombers. Putin flew in one of them.
