Russia invades Ukraine

On February 24 Russian forces crossed the border into what even Russia recognizes as Ukrainian territory. There have been artillery bombardments, air strikes and missile strikes. The Ukrainians claimed to have shot down Russian fighter jets. Russian troops advanced from Russia and Belarus. This was after weeks of Russia saying it would not invade Ukraine.Putin said the objective of military action was ''the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.'' He warned that any country that interferes will have instant retaliation. The Luhansk People's Republic and the Donets People's Republic requested Russian military support. But they did not call on Russia to invade the rest of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Army and private militias are fighting back. Biden and other Western leaders have promised to impose stronger sanctions. Ukraine has appealed for this and weapons. Russia has said Ukrainian soldiers who lay down their arms will be treated with mercy.The Kremlin has said that Putin shall decide when the operation stops. Moscow claimed to have destroyed over 70 military installations including airfields. Kyiv's main airport Borysopil has been hit as it also functions as an airbase. Russia said it has downed a Ukrainian combat helicopter and four Bayraktar TB-2 drones. The Russian Stock Market has routed, with some stocks down over 50%. That is twice as bad as the 1998 crash. The RUB has fallen over 10% against the USD. Interest rates are likely to rise significantly. It is probable that more banks will be sanctioned. The US might seek to get Russia blocked from SWIFT but the US does not have sole control of this. The EU is not talking about refusing to buy Russian energy. T...
