Russia keen to avoid a nuclear arms race

On August 18 the Russian Minister Defense announced his country's intention to avert a nuclear arms race. The United States repudiated the Intermediate Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty earlier in August 2019. The US alleges that Russia possesses a type of nuclear arms that are prohibited under the terms of the INF. Moscow says that such an accusation is specious. As the US has shredded its treaty, Russia declared that it holds itself absolved of its commitments pursuant to the INF.Russia would prefer to avoid a nuclear arms race because it would be ruinously expensive without enhancing security. Russia will only build more short-and-medium range nuclear arms if the US does so. If Russia began manufacturing such arms it would also enervate various other nuclear weapons states, and Russia does not wish to do this.
