Russia launches icebreaker warship

On October 25 Russia announced the existence of a new combat icebreaker named Ivan Papanin. The purpose of the vessel is to defend the Russian Arctic. Earlier in October over 12 000 troops participated in nuclear war drills in the Russian Far North. Russian claims some of the Arctic Shelf although these claims are not generally recognized by other countries.The United Shipbuilding Corporation, which is state owned, launched the Ivan Papanin. The corporation said the ship is the only one of its kind in that it can break ice, act as a tugboat and a warship. The government is keen for people to know that the ship has a portable anti-aircraft missile system. It can also be a base for a helicopter.
