Russia licenses second vaccine

RUSSIA / FSU POLITICS - In Brief 15 Oct 2020 by Alex Teddy

On October 14 the announcement was made by the president. The fact that Putin said it indicates the importance attached thereto. The peptide-based shot was created by Vektor (State Virology and Biotechnology Center). The EpiVacCorona has been administered to some cabinet ministers. Over 100 volunteers have already had it trialed on them. A new trial with over 40,000 volunteers shall commence. Sixty thousand doses will be manufactured asap, so that if the new trial is successful, the drug can be administered to patients immediately. The Ministry of Health has not provided particulars about the trial outcomes or the approval procedure. The ministry said it is being examined for safety. That does not inspire confidence! If it is still being scrutinized, then why is it being rolled out to such a big trial sample?Vektor is an erstwhile bioweapons lab. It is one of the only two places in the world with samples of smallpox. The government said a third type of coronavirus vaccine will be licensed in December 2020. A vaccine is badly needed. The country has had 1.3 million cases of coronavirus but a low death rate from those cases. Infections are spreading very rapidly. Russia is the 4th most affected country. There are some local semi-lockdowns. A national total lockdown does not seem to have been even contemplated.
