Russia might be banned from all international sport

The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) announced on 23 September that it is considering banning Russia from all international sports competitions. This would also entail forbidding Russia from hosting international sports events. WADA declared that there were many inconsistencies in laboratory data provided by the Russian Federation. Moscow has three weeks in which to offer an explanation. Russia had already been suspended by WADA due to a state backed doping program. On September 23 the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) banned Russia from the World Championships. The World Championships are beginning in Qatar this week. Sport is crucial to Russian prestige. Russia has hosted the Summer Olympics, the Winter Olympics and the Football World Cup.It is unlikely that a total ban on Russia taking part in international sport will be imposed. In 2016 there was a similar doping scandal. The International Olympic Committee only banned part of the Russian Olympic team. If WADA recommends a ban of any kind it can be appealed to the Court for Arbitration in Sport (CAS).Russia has said it is being treated unfairly and has co-operated with WADA. Moreover, Moscow points out foreign athletes are often allowed to take banned substances due to medical conditions.
