Russia mulls new court

On June 1 the head of the Association of Russian Lawyers said that Russia is coming up with an alternative to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). ECHR was set up by the Council of Europe in 1950. Russia was expelled from the Council of Europe due to the invasion of Ukraine. Russia wants to set up a new court for itself, other BRICS countries and some former Soviet countries. Russia has people from its Ministry of Justice, Investigative Committee and presidential administration working on it. Putin has been talking about this since 2020. This is yet another sign of Russia de-coupling from the Western world and seeking to forge alliance with anti-Western countries. Russia is regularly castigated in the European Court of Human Rights for abuses such as criminalizing peaceful protests and discriminating against gay people. The court has regularly found against Russia and fined Russia tens of millions of EUR down the decades. However, there is no enforcement. Russia often refused to pay out or change its ways.
