Russia opening new defense office in Serbia

On October 22 it was reported that Russia plans to open a military office in Serbia. Serbia is trying to join the EU but not NATO. Belgrade is amenable to the move but final approval has not yet been granted.Serbia was due to take part in Slavic Brotherhood military exercise in September 2020 along with Russia and Belarus. Serbia pulled out at the last minute. The EU had told the Serbs that if they took part in Slavic Brotherhood then they could forget about EU membership. Serbia is a Slavonic and Orthodox country giving it a deep affinity with Russia. The Serbs buy most of their arms from Russia. The country also purchases most of its oil and gas from Russia. There is a possibility that the TurkStream Pipeline will pass through Serbia carrying Russian gas to the EU.
