Russia pulls troops back from Ukrainian Border

On April 22 Russia announced that it was sending soldiers back to their bases after exercises along the frontier. This included exercises in Crimea. The return to base shall be completed by May 1. The buildup caused widespread condemnation.There had been an uptick in firing across the ceasefire line in eastern Ukraine in mid April. Ukraine said it was glad that Russia will be pulling back its forces. Ukraine called up its reservists on April 21. Putin suggested that Zelensky meet him in Moscow. On April 20 Zelensky said he would meet Putin in eastern Ukraine. Moscow said that the drills included 10,000 soldiers, 200 planes and over 1,200 vehicles. The EU estimated that 100,000 soldiers took part in the drills. On April 16 Moscow said that large sections of the Black Sea adjacent to Crimea are now barred to foreign warships and state-owned merchant ships until November 2021. Kyiv denounced this as Ukraine still regards Crimea as Ukrainian soil. Limitations on civil aviation near Crimea were also announced by Russia.
