Russia reintroduces Soviet heroine mother award

On August 16 Russia brought back the title of "Heroine Mother" for those who give birth to ten children or more. Putin has long lamented Russia's fertility rate of 1.6. He wanted to boost it to 1.9, which would still be below the replacement level of 2.1. A mother of 10 children shall receive USD 16,500. In Russia the minimum wage is about USD 230 per month. The government is considering banning promotion of a child-free lifestyle. The encouragement of traditional morality is supposed to boost the population but has failed. The Russian Statistics Agency said that from January to May 2022 the population fell 86,000 per month. At least 73,000 Russians emigrated during that time. They are usually young professionals. Google searches for ''how to leave Russia'' are rising. Popular destinations are Serbia, Armenia, Georgia, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan and Israel. Russia had several million migrant workers from former USSR countries before the pandemic. Many of them were laid off in 2020 and left the country. This reduced the population. The Orthodox Church is an ally of the president in striving to increase family size. Ironically those with the highest fertility rates are ethnic minorities who are often Muslims.Â
