Russia reviews buildings in Arctic

On June 5 the prosecutor-general commissioned a review into buildings on permafrost. A fuel tank leak in the Arctic has caused environmental cataclysm. Putin ordered a state of emergency in Norilsk because on May 29 the tank at the thermal power plant accidentally spilled 20 000 tons of diesel. It has polluted two rivers and a lake. Thawing in the permafrost caused the tank pillars to sink. Norilsk Nickel is the company which owned the plant. The cleanup will cost an estimated USD 145 million. It is estimated that it will take 10 years for the local ecosystem to recover.The company is owned by Vladimir Potanin. He is Russia's richest man and has a fortune of USD 20 billion. The government wants to prevent similar disasters. 65% of Russia's land mass is covered by permafrost. Temperatures in May 2020 were 10 degrees above the average for the month.
