Russia says there is progress on reunification with Belarus

On April 22 Putin announced that there has been headway on the goal of Russia and Belarus reuniting. Lukashenka confirmed this. Lukashenka had been in Moscow for talks.Legilsation shall be forthcoming. Lukashenka said he is about to make the most consequential announcement of his presidency. Opposition leader Svytlana Tsikhanouskaya said that Belarus should remain independent. Lukashenka has been dragging his feet on reunification since he signed a treaty aimed at in 1999. He has even jailed those who advocated union with Russia. However, as he is desperate for support he has to make concessions to Russia.On April 20 the US reintroduced sanctions on 9 state companies. This will be a major hit to Belarus' economy.
