Russia sees largest protests since 2011

On August 10 at least 20 000 people attended an illegal protest in Moscow. The protestors estimated the number at 50 000. The protest was against arbitrary decision to ban opposition candidates from the local elections due on September 8. Well known performers such as the rapper Oxymiron attended the rally despite being specifically forbidden from doing so. The government is blaming the US and other countries for fomenting the protests. There have been protests in a dozen cities. Almost 2 000 people have been arrested for illegal protest. The situation is worrying for the government. However, there is no chance that the state is about to be overthrown. United Russia (the ruling party) is in serious trouble. The other pro-Kremlin parties such as the Communist Party may benefit.
