Russia sells arms to Gabon

On November 20 the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had sold weapons to Gabon. This is the first ever arms sale by Russia to Gabon. The African nation is a former French colony. The weapons sold were small arms and their purpose is supposedly to guard national parks. The country is plagued by poachers and illegal loggers.Gabon is a small, oil-rich country which has been ruled by the Bongo dynasty since independence in 1960. The American-educated President Bongo speaks flawless English and was seen as pro-Western. Western criticism of his regime has led him to strengthen ties with non-Western countries.
