Russia sells gas to Uzbekistan

On October 7 Putin said that Russia will begin the exports, and they will be transported via Kazakhstan. Russia's oil and gas exports have diminished due to Western sanctions and the EU's attempts to reduce its reliance on Russian gas. In 2022 gas exports fell 22%.  Putin made the announcement as the presidents of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan visited him in Moscow. It is a good sign for Russia that the presidents of the two most populous post Soviet states (besides Ukraine) are willing to visit. Uzbekistan is rich in gas but has faced electricity cuts for several years. Most of its 32 million people live in poverty. Uzbekistan has over 1.5 million guest workers in Russia and desperately needs their remittances. Relations with Kazakhstan have cooled since the Ukraine War began. Uzbekistan is strictly neutral and refuses to join Russia's military alliance, the CSTO. Before 2022 there had been some speculation that Uzbekistan would join it and the Eurasian Economic Union. But the visit of the two presidents to Moscow in October 2023 hints at an improvement in relations with Russia.
