Russia sending 600 more military instructors to the Central African Republic

On July 2 Moscow confirmed the move. This takes the total number of military instructors in the Central African Republic (CAR) to over 1,100. Some sources say that the real figure is over 2,000. The United Nations alleged that the CAR Army and its Russian confederates have committed many human rights abuses.The Russian instructors are officially there to train the police and gendarmerie. However, the instructors have engaged in plenty of fighting against the rebels.Russian instructors have been in CAR since 2018. Russia has been supplying weapons to CAR. Wagner - a Russian private military company - is said to be present in CAR. Wagner is believed to be run by Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is a close friend of Putin.Putin has striven to increase Russia's presence in Africa. Being the poorest continent and relatively neglected by the West it is the only continent where there is scope to expand Russia's sway.
