Russia sends aid to Cuba

On July 24 Russia sent two Antonov 124 cargo planes containing 88 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba. There are demonstrations in Cuba due to economic hardship. The aid dispatched by Moscow includes comestibles, PPE and over a million medical masks.The USA recently imposed even stricter sanctions on Cuba to punish the government for repressing protests. Biden has promised to ramp up sanctions if Cuba behavior does not change. Since July 11 there have been protests in 40 Cuban cities. The economy has been severely hit by coronavirus. The lack of tourists has meant food shortages as the government cannot afford sufficient food imports. People have been saying ''down with the dictatorship.''Over 100 people have been arrested in connection with protests. The government can easily contain these protests.Russia warned others not to interfere in Cuba's internal affairs. Cuba has been an ally of Russia since 1960. There is an Aeroflot direct flight from Moscow to Havana. Russia does not want to see one of its only staunch friends in Latin America come into the US orbit.
