Russia ships grain to Africa for free

On November 17 Moscow announced the shipments had been dispatched bound for Somalia and Burkina Faso. They are due to arrive by the end of November 2023. Two ships were sent and they each contained 25,000 tons. In July 2023 Putin said Russia would give 200,000 tons of grain to six African nations gratis. They are Zimbabwe, Mali, Eritrea, the Central African Republic, Somalia and Burkina Faso. Eritrea voted for Russia in the UN on the Ukraine issue. The others were neutral. The announcement came shortly after Russia ended the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Russia said that Ukraine sold little grain to the poorest countries in Africa. Russia sees the Global South and particularly Africa as somewhere it can spread its influence and tap into anti-Western sentiment. Ukraine and Russia are among the world's largest grain exporters.
