Russia steps up nuclear weapons tests

Over the past week Russian nuclear submarines have been conducting drills. Russia is keen to let NATO know that as Trump cancelled the INF the Russians can respond. President Putin was present to witness the exercises. The exercises are called Grom 2019. The government eagerly released press statements about the exercises and footage of the exercises. 16-18 October there were drills involving 5 nuclear submarines, 100 aircraft and 12 000 troops. One of the nuclear submarine's missiles failed to launch.Many are worried that Russia and NATO are getting into a new arms race. The Russian economy is growing only very modestly. Additional military spending will put a major strain on the economy. But there is no doubt that the government will consider this a price worth paying.
