Russia vetoes UN resolution on nuclear disarmament

On August 26 the UN proposed a resolution that Russia said was unbalanced and politicized. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is reviewed every 5 years. It aims to stop the spread of nuclear arms, to encourage disarmament and to promote cooperation on nuclear energy. The text had been under negotiation since August 1, 2022. The text referred to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Russia took exception to this. The text expressed grave concern over military activity near the nuclear plant and Ukraine's loss of control there.
