Russia will fine media for not calling themselves 'foreign agents'

On May 3 Putin signed a law instituting financial penalties for publishing commentary and reportage that is not labelled ''foreign agent'' if the statement was produced by a source that has been designated a foreign agent by the government. Each transgression can be fined USD 650. Indivivudal journalists will be fined as well as their organizations. Meduza, one of Russia's major indepedendent media organizations, was proclaimed a foreign agent on April 26. Meduza could be blocked and its jouralists could be jailed for making misstatements. Meduza has been based in Latvia since 2014.19 news organizations have been dubbed foreign agents. Any individual who shares statements published by foreign agents without saying tat the source is a foreign agent will be fined.The move is part of a broader policy of clamping down on the media ahead of the September 2021 parliamentary elections.
