Russian Defense Minister inspects nuclear weapons

On August 12 Shoigu went to the Russian Arctic. The Defense Ministry was eager that the media should report that he was looking at a nuclear arms test site. Sometimes Russia likes to remind the world of its nuclear deterrent. Russia has been expanding its bases in the Arctic for several years. There are S-400 anti aerial systems there. Some Soviet-era bases closed in the 1990s have been reopened. The Arctic contains oil and gas. It also controls the North Sea Route, which is now navigable most of the year due to global warming. It is also the quick way for missiles to fly to the US—over the North Pole. Finland's joining NATO has somewhat weakened Russia's position in the Arctic. Sweden's joining would be more bad news from a Russian viewpoint.
