Russian gas cut off to Bulgaria and Poland

On April 27 Russia announced that Gazprom has suspended all sales to the two EU countries. That is because they refuse to pay in RUB. The contracts state that the gas will be paid for in EUR. In March 2022 Putin said unfriendly countries had to pay in RUB. He did not at first carry out his threat to stop gas sales to countries that did not comply. The aim of insisting on RUB payment is that these countries have to buy RUB which would drive up the value of the currency. Russian gas is still transiting Poland and Bulgaria en route to other nations. Poland and Bulgaria are heavily dependent on Russian gas.Poland says its gas storage facilities are 76% full and it can buy gas from other sources. Poland and Bulgaria are fairly relaxed about the stoppage of Russian gas because it is summer. People had speculated that the EU might stop buying Russian energy. But Russia has used gas as a weapon first. Russia also wants to punish Bulgaria and Poland (both NATO members) for assisting Ukraine.
