Russian investments abroad almost double

On September 13 it was reported in Vedomosti newspaper that Russian investment in foreign startups was USD 860 million in the first half of 2019. This is more than twice as much as in the first six months of 2018 (USD 418 million). In the first six months of 2019 Russian investors have put only USD 248 million into the Russian market.Most of the foreign investment is in IT. Some Western markets are effectively closed to Russian investors but some Russian funds are still active in the West. Western investors mostly abandoned Russia from 2015 onwards. Contrariwise Russian fund investments in foreign companies stayed about the same level as before 2015 until 2019. They have now increased markedly.
