Russian IT specialists emigrating

On March 20 the Russian Association for Electronic Communications (RAEC) said about 60,000 IT workers have left the country since February 2020. Since the 1990s there has been a brain drain, but this has hugely accelerated since the war began 3 weeks ago. IT specialists are location independent. Other creative people such as translators, artists, entrepreneurs and others are departing, too. RAEV fears that 100,000 more IT workers will depart in April 2022. The Russian Parliament has been informed of this. Emigrants are heading to Georgia, Armenia, Turkey and Kyrgyzstan. Wealthier ones go to the UAE, where Russians can stay for 30 days without a visa. Some Russians live there on visa runs - leaving the country every 30 days by going to another country for a few hours before returning to the UAE for another 30 days. Sky-high air fares are one of the few factors deterring more emigration. Moreover, the lack of financial connection is another impediment. A Russian who moves abroad may find it impossible to access his bank account in Russia. Russians are forbidden from buying foreign currency in Russia or from sending USD and EUR abroad.
